Description
Large unstained cells (LUCs) are a specific type of white blood cell identified during a full blood count (FBC) test. They are large; peroxidase-negative cells that don't fit neatly into the typical white blood cell categories (neutrophils; lymphocytes; monocytes; etc.). Essentially; they represent a heterogeneous population of cells; including activated lymphocytes; atypical lymphocytes; and potentially other immature or abnormal cells. Increased LUC counts can be associated with various conditions; including viral and fungal infections; leukemia; inflammation; chronic renal failure; malaria; and postoperative responses. The normal range for LUC count is typically 0-0.4 x 10^9/L.
